The Integrated Composite Analyzer (ICAN) provides a comprehensive linear analysis of multilayered fiber composites. The analysis contains the essential features required to effectively design structural components made from fiber composites. ICAN includes micromechanical design features to predict ply-level hygral, thermal, and mechanical properties. Laminate analysis features are included to account for interply layer effects. ICAN integrates these with additional features to provide a comprehensive analysis capability for composite structures.
ICAN also includes these additional features:
- ply stress-strain influence coefficients,
- microstresses and microstrain influence coefficients,
- concentration factors around a circular hole,
- calculation of probable delamination locations around a circular hole,
- Poisson's ratio mismatch details near a straight edge,
- free-edge stresses,
- material card input for finite element analysis using NASTRAN (also available from COSMIC) or MARC,
- failure loads based on maximum stress criterion,
- laminate failure stresses based on first-ply failures and fiber breakage criteria,
- transverse shear stresses and normal and interlaminar stresses,
- an option to input the ply level property data when constituent level(fiber and matrix) properties are not available,
- a reduction in input data for symmetric lay-ups, and
- durability/fatigue type analyses for both thermal and mechanical cyclic loads. The code can assess degradation due to mechanical and thermal cyclic loads with or without a defect.
ICAN includes a dedicated data bank of constituent material properties which allows the user to build a database of material properties of commonly-used fibers and matrices. The user need only specify code names for constituents. Input to ICAN includes constituent material properties (or code names), factors reflecting the fabrication process and composite geometry. Output includes the various ply and composite properties, composite structural response and composite stress analysis results with details of failure.
ICAN carries the NASA case number LEW-15592. It was originally released as part of the NASA COSMIC collection.
